For the 14th consecutive year, Lisbon will see the celebration of gay pride as part of the traditional Festas de Lisboa (a whole month of parties and events celebrating several saints). As it has been happening in the past editions, the Pride programme will be divided in two major events: the parade (marcha) and a big party (arraial).
Gay Pride Parade on the 22nd of June
The Marcha do Orgulho Gay will be on the Saturday the 22ndof June. It’s an event organised by several Portuguese LGBT associations. Traditionally the parade has a strong political message, in an effort to shine light on issues that affect LGBT individuals in the country. Portugal has recently passed several key legislation such as same-sex marriage (in 2010) and this year, co-adoption for same-sex couples has also been approved by the national parliament. Still, standard adoption for same-sex couples is not possible and there are other issues which will be probably be heard during this year’s gay pride parade. The parade will begin in the Principe Real park. This is the centre of the gayest district of Lisbon, where several bars, clubs and other gay venues exist.
Gay Pride Party on the 6th of July
The arraial or Gay Pride Party is at this moment scheduled to take place on the 6th of July. The party will take place in one of the most amazing squares in Europe: Terreiro do Paço (Praça do Comércio). It’s a large plaza, located just by the river. This plaza has always played major roles in Portuguese history, including being a large slave-market in the 1600’s or a stage for executions during the Inquisition period. The Pride Party will include DJs, stands, bars, lounge space and more from 16:00.
