CRU, the newest gay bar in Lisbon, offers alternative programs to naughty men who want to have some fun. LisbonBeach had a chat with the owners, Jorge Ferreira and Bruce Dixon, to better understand why this is not just another gay spot.
Fetish, leather, macho and trans. All these alternative lifestyles within the gay scene are some of the main features of CRU, which has recently opened near Príncipe Real Square, at São Marçal Street, 170. The bar closes only on Wednesdays and invites gay people to feel welcomed and comfortable in expressing their own personality and sexuality. “We both identify closely with the fetish scene and felt that there was the need for a bar in Lisbon where people with similar interests can meet and socialise beyond the specialist websites. The Internet has made communication a lot easier, but lacks the human and personal dimension”, explains Jorge. The idea to fill in a gap in the Lisbon gay market was originated in London, where the Portuguese Jorge and the British Bruce were involved in its different gay communities: “Soon after we met, we decided to move to Lisbon specifically to open a gay bar. Our references and inspiration come from our experience of gay nightlife in London and the US”, says Jorge, who lived in the British capital for 16 years and believes that Lisbon still needs “a lot more bars and clubs specifically for the LGBT community”. Hence, CRU is a place for specific tastes of gay men in an intimate and sexy environment. There are special theme nights where different and stimulating atmospheres come together to give pleasure to the LGBT audience. Mondays are dedicated to alternative cabaret shows. On Tuesdays, a more relaxed cruise feeling takes place. “Trans-tatica!” is the name of the Thursday nights devoted to the trans-community, including tips on make-up! The weekends go deeper (literally!) into the fetish scenes, with strict dress code on Fridays. There are no exceptions and leather, rubber, boots and uniform are mandatory. Saturdays are hard-core nights for “men who like men” and Sundays’ “After the Sun” happy-hours invite people to go on speedos, topless, nude or wearing anything that shows more than hide. This is just the beginning and more ideas are to come. According to Jorge, “we are also working with the creative community to include a regular live performance night”. If you are looking for an alternative to the Portuguese gay nightlife and want to have fun with no fear, CRU is definitely the place to go.
